Previously, the presence of many gods explained the natural phenomena, but during the Amarna period there was a rise in monotheism. The Amarna Period was characterized by governmental and religious reforms with artistic implications that both challenged traditions and defined an era. Only through luck and perseverance has any evidence of this obscured age been unearthed. The "Amarna Period", this most famous of periods of Ancient Egyptian history, was directed by Akhenaten, a Pharaoh likely second only in fame to Tutankhamun, his son-in-law.

The Amarna Letters (also known as the “Amarna tablets”) are a set of clay tablets that were discovered in 1887 near to the ruins of Akhenaten’s city, Akhetaten (Amarna).
