2015-04-08 · SOLO first appeared as part of our CPD programme a number of years ago and all staff are familiar with it, however, a number of staff have started taking the use of the SOLO Taxonomy to new levels, spreading and embedding its use as they go.

Biggs’ Solo (Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome) Taxonomy is a systematic way of describing how a learner’s performance develops from simple to complex levels in their learning. There are5 stages, namely Pre-structural, Uni-structural, Multi-structural which are in a quantitative phrase and Relational and Extended Abstract which are in a qualitative phrase. Benjamin Bloom’s taxonomy does a brilliant job of offering ‘verbs’ in categories that impose a helpful cognitive framework for planning learning experiences, but it neglects important ideas, such as self-knowledge that UbD places at the pinnacle of understanding, or the idea of moving from incompetence to competence that the SOLO taxonomy offers. So with apologies to Bloom (whose work we love), we have gathered six alternatives to his legendary, world-beating taxonomy, from the SOLO Taxonomy, but in a pyramid, so it looks a bit like Bloom’s! Using SOLO taxonomy can give our students the chance to go deeper into the learning and provide teachers with the opportunity to assess that learning as they progress.
